Our Legacy

Our Legacy | The Next Generation

Every rug that leaves our workshop represents more than craftsmanship—it carries the story of three generations devoted to preserving one of Mexico's greatest textile traditions. Woven by hand, colored by nature, and created with patience and purpose, each piece is designed to become a lasting heirloom that connects the past with the future.

Growing up surrounded by looms, wool, and the vibrant colors of natural dyes, Wilmer represents the future of Isaac Vásquez Studio. Guided by his father and inspired by his grandfather's legacy, he combines centuries-old weaving techniques with a contemporary design perspective that speaks to collectors, designers, and modern homes around the world.

While embracing innovation, Wilmer remains committed to preserving the values that define the family workshop: exceptional craftsmanship, sustainable practices, and respect for Zapotec culture.

His vision ensures that the Vásquez family's legacy will continue for generations to come.

The Region

Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca

Cradled by the Sierra Juárez mountains, our village has woven wool for more than five hundred years. The light, the plants, and the water here shape every rug that leaves the studio.

The elder weaver explained the entire process — from obtaining the wool to dyeing and weaving. I bought two 5×8 rugs; you'll never find this quality or design in the US. 100% wool, natural dyes, signed by the weaver in the corner, and shipped safely via UPS.

A warm Oaxacan welcome to a spectacular workshop. Colors and textures everywhere — a feast for the eyes. Make sure to see the little cochineal insects that give the blood-red dye its color. Thank you, Familia Vásquez!

The elder weaver spoke excellent English and explained the process of obtaining wool, dying wool and weaving. I bought two 5' x 8' rugs — you'll never find this quality and design in the US. They happily shipped the rugs via UPS and they arrived safely. 100% wool with natural dyes, signed by the weaver. Support the arts!

I arrived by recommendation and enjoyed every moment of my very long visit. The dyeing process was an eye-opening experience, but more importantly I was overwhelmed by the welcoming attitude of Isaac and Graciela. The workshop sits in a nice garden — almost a temple for people who appreciate artisanship, weaving and beauty. Highly recommended.

Longstanding family business with a very professional talk and explanation from the owner about the carding, spinning, dyeing, and weaving processes. With an opportunity to buy some high quality goods at the end.

One of the highlights of our time in Oaxaca. J. Isaac Jr. is a master weaver and designer whose family has been weaving for generations — using pre-Columbian natural dyes on pure wool and performing every step by hand. So welcoming, and fascinating to appreciate the huge amount of work in each piece. We felt honored to witness this centuries-old practice.

The cochineal demonstration alone is worth the visit — a tiny insect that produces the most brilliant red I've ever seen. We bought a small runner and are already planning a return for a larger commission.
